Diesel Power Magazine how to. With emissions standards for over-the-road truck engines becoming more stringent every year, meeting the ever-changing regulations forces diesel engine manufacturers to push the technology envelope even further. The complicated emissions systems employed by engine makers compromise fuel economy and power in order to meet the restrictive tailpipe regulations. Instead, engine developers worked from the perspective that all the systems and components should be engineered and refined to complement each other.

To accomplish this, the engineers retained the best attributes of the ISX15, and then made the improvements and refinements that allow the engine to achieve the greater fuel economy, power output, and durability they desired.

The all-new Cummins X15 turbodiesel engine is the result of those innovations. The X15 features a new, optimized cam profile that minimizes parasitic loss during combustion and increases thermal efficiency. The piston design handles the higher compression and reduces heat transfer from combustion to the engine oil. The X15 also features a variable-geometry turbocharger with a stronger actuator and a redesigned impeller that provides rapid boost and improved engine braking up to brake horsepower at 2, rpm.

Steel plungers and a diamond-like coating on the roller tappets of the injectors are used for greater durability. The X15 is available in two different configurations: Performance and Efficiency.

Each series is designed to fill a niche in the truck-engine market. The Performance-series engine has a power range of to hp, with 2, lb-ft of torque. It is well suited for heavy-haul, vocational, and emergency vehicles. On the other hand, the Efficiency Series, with its to hp and 1, lb-ft of torque, is better for meeting the needs of regional-haul and line-haul applications for which greater fuel mileage is important.

Eliminating as much drag as possible frees up power. So, to lessen the amount of drag, a low-friction water pump, geartrain, oiling system, pistons, and exhaust gas recirculation EGR are employed on the X Of course, Cummins would never release any of its technology without performing extensive tests first.

So, before the X15 went into full production, more than 9 million miles of field testing all of them logged in real-world driving situations were performed on the new engine, with every component being thoroughly scrutinized before the powerplant received its final approval.

Cat sdpFeb 27, I drive a W9 day cab with the hp, pretty much the same set up as Bighosscummins. We got it in January and I have just over 8, miles on her so far. The only problem so far is that it makes an annoying sound when idling, kinda hard to explain, but it sounds like an injured duck or a really faint fog horn noise. Is anyone else getting this?

CornStalkFeb 27, Feb 28, RobertsFeb 28, Think about this: the average amount of revenue lost during a single day of unplanned downtime is equal to the amount you can save with a 2 percent increase in fuel economy over an entire year.

And Cummins X15 engines are delivering reliability and uptime over everything else. With almost 20 years of refinement on the liter platform, the X15 is one of the most reliable heavy-duty engines that the industry has seen in decades. Cummins continues to deliver best-in-class fuel economy with a percent gain on the X15 Efficiency Series engines in the horsepower range and percent better mpg at hp ratings.

Downspeeding allows access to peak torque starting at just rpm. If you are currently running older equipment such as an EPA ISX15, you can expect to see up to 20 percent better fuel economy with a X15 Efficiency Series engine. The X15 Performance Series engine for delivers the most powerful engine and engine brake combination in the industry.

The engine brake delivers increased braking power where it is needed most, in the rpm range. The high-flow ERG cooler, fuel pump and turbo compressor work together with high temperature exhaust valves and maximum piston cooling to enhance reliability and durability at higher output levels.

Having peak torque available at rpm ensures exceptional fuel economy for a high-performance engine. Extended maintenance intervals significantly reduce downtime and your total cost of ownership by 40 percent over the firstmiles vs. Oil changes can be extended as many as 80, miles with Cummins OilGuard program, and DPF maintenance is now needed only once everymiles.

Hello everyone, I was hoping to start a thread for feedback on the X Cummins motor! Hopefully people can chime in on their experiences with this new motor. I am working on specs for a new and I chose the X economy series. My current truck cruises 68 and i love it. I have contemplated gearing it to run a little bit more RPM and going with the horsepower performance series with lb feet of torque Anyone with a X that can give feedback??

BakermanFeb 26, Feb 26, 4. If it's anything like the previous cm I have it will have plenty of grunt. Fuel economy doesn't change much.

That's what I'll get if I have a company driver in it. If I buy an aero truck it would be the horse one. I would seriously consider a glider with a cat if you want a hood with a decent motor.

These epa trucks cost a lot more to maintain with def, dpf cleaning, extra filters, sensors everywhere, the isx fuel pump issue everymiles as well as turbo and actuator for about same miles. Doesn't live as long as old style simple turbo. You know, if I put more money in my pocket I wouldn't have to drive as much. How's that figure in? It's easier to avoid California and it's dumb CARB nonsense and actually make a better living by avoiding the edges of the country. Where people mostly have their heads screwed on straight.
